13. Meditating into Sleep

Up till now we’ve focused on integrating meditation into the hours of the day when we’re awake. That omits about a third of each twenty-four-hour cycle.

The yogis and lamas who, hundreds of years ago, dedicated their lives to attaining higher awareness through meditative practice weren’t going to leave that big chunk of prime real estate undeveloped. They devised methods for opening to turiya during the sleep and dream states in addition to the waking state. Some of these approaches, such as the more advanced techniques of “dream yoga” expounded by certain schools of Tibetan Buddhism, are best practiced under the supervision of a teacher who specializes in them. But there are also basic nighttime techniques that you can do on your own, even as a newbie. This one is my favorite because it’s the simplest, yet very powerful.
